ExtraTorrent alternatives after ExtraTorrent shut down

If you’ve been on the internet for as long as I have, you probably know what the site ExtraTorrent is and how it used to be one of the largest (the second largest in fact) torrent site in the world. However, in 2017, the website voluntarily shut down without giving any explanation. This left the army of loyal fans and followers in a state of confusion since they didn’t know where to go now. Though some did move to new sites that used the Extratorrents name, many were skeptical and didn’t feel at home on them since a number of these sites were counterfeits.

The main goal of ExtraTorrent was to provide users with an easy-to-use directory and search engine for every kind of torrent file. People used to upload torrents to ExtraTorrent which were able to be tracked by any BitTorrent tracker. A reason why people used to visit ExtraTorrent so often was due to the availability of high-quality torrents there, and due to the extremely user-friendly website which hosted a vibrant and ever-growing community as well. Even after several government-led witch hunts for sites that allowed illegal downloading of content, extratorrents remained online and the community thrived more than ever. The website operated just like other torrent systems which relied on the p2p (peer to peer) file protocol that is dependent on the number of peers and their willingness to ‘seed’ or share their files, which the site had an abundance of.

Though the website had a rather simplistic design, the content that was featured on it was greatly spread through concise categories and subcategories which made it stand out from the rest. The web page also featured a “most searched” category which was an extremely useful tool for finding the popular torrent quickly. Other than that, the payload on extratorrents was extremely low and didn’t require a high-speed internet connection to load. The only downsides were the ads and popups that plagued ExtraTorrent.

A year before shutting down, ironically enough, ExtraTorrent started encrypting the content on their website in order to prevent proxy sites from providing other people access to them. These proxy sites would often take down the ads and popups as well. After the banning, around 90% of the proxy sites became unusable.

All of this, however, is a thing of the past now, and in this article, I will be looking at some of the alternate sites that you can use in order to download your favorite content through p2p (peer to peer) file protocol. Before we jump into the article, I would like to remind you that sharing and downloading copyrighted materials is illegal and is not endorsed by me, this article is for educational purpose only, and though there are a number of alternatives to ExtraTorrent that are still going strong, I recommend that you act with caution while accessing them and recommend that you always use a VPN whenever, or whereever you torrent. Since even though torrenting and other P2P file-sharing activities are not technically illegal in most countries, they do carry a number of dangers which range from hackers stealing your data to files carrying viruses and malware onto your devices. Some countries have also straight out outlawed torrenting due to it being used for illegal activities, which is why you will need a VPN to access them and torrent safely. A VPN provides a secure and encrypted channel for your data to travel through (a “tunnel”) and enables you to be safe and not worry about someone monitoring what you are doing or use your connection to add their own data to yours. Be it your ISP, the government, or some dude in his mom’s basement, a VPN has the ability to protect you from all such threats. This is done by changing your IP address which enables you to appear as if you are in a different location.

Now, back to the topic at hand. The best alternatives for ExtraTorrent. I’ve compiled a short list for all you of torrent enthusiasts out there (in no chronological order). Let’s begin now, shall we?

YTS.AG shows the efforts of a group to reinstate the YTS style website and the content that it originally had, making it an excellent ExtraTorrents alternative. YTS.ag is now being redirected to YTS.am.

This website is particularly different from the others on our list since it gives you the ability to stream torrents directly and also temporarily download them on the computer. Popcorn time is a great source to stream your favorite TV shows and movies. Best of all, all of you can get all of the movies straight from a single server.
